On Fashion Tech Podcast, Healthe Founder Fred Maxik Touts Far-UVC Light in Retail Fitting Rooms as Weapon Against COVID-19

With COVID-19 still in the forefront of everyone’s lives, one of the major challenges for clothing retailers as they contemplate reopening is how to make people feel safe in fitting rooms. The fitting room is one of the most important areas in a store. It is where customer decisions are made. However, it is also small and enclosed, and thus is an area of greater concern for shoppers in terms of the spread of germs.  Retailers must instill confidence in their customers that they will be safe as they try on clothes.

Studies have shown that Far-UVC light can inactivate pathogens such as the coronavirus, preventing the virus from reproducing.  What is novel about Far-UVC technology is that, unlike ordinary germicidal UVC light, it is human-safe and cannot penetrate human skin and eyes. “That is why Far-UVC is a perfect fit in the retail environment,” Healthe founder Fred Maxik said on last week’s “Fashion is Your Business” podcast, a weekly show which focuses on the intersection between fashion and business. “We can put it in places where…at the same time, its cleaning the air, its cleaning the surfaces, and it’s been demonstrated to do so very effectively.”

Alert Tech CEO Brian Laney, who also appeared on the podcast, believes that Alert Tech, a company which specializes in providing data-driven and efficient technology for fitting rooms, is uniquely fit to provide and implement an infrastructure with Healthe’s Far-UVC lighting products to sanitize fitting rooms more efficiently.  Both Maxik and Laney are convinced that Far-UVC can be a viable solution in the fight against the spread of COVID-19 and would go a long way in making customers feel safe.

Customer safety is not the only valuable result that could arise from deploying Far-UVC in fitting rooms. It can also reduce a retailer’s need for other costs, and increase safety for its employees.  “Right now…we’re in reduced labor,” Laney explained.  “We have fewer people in the store, and one of their jobs…is to walk in and wipe down the entire fitting room.” This, Laney concludes, could lead to more potential exposure to the virus for the staff member picked for that task as they will be moving from fitting room to fitting room.

The retail world has begun to embrace the fact that there will continue to be a “new normal” so long as the pandemic exists. As a result, companies will have to continue to innovate and develop technology to ensure safety and efficiency in the workplace and for customers and employees.  Healthe and Alert Tech understand these circumstances, and have had a meeting of the minds, bringing together exceptional technologies to provide a solution for retailers. The podcast discussion with Maxik and Laney is an enlightening look at what can happen when people come together and join forces.  As host Marc Raco put it:  “this is an American story of great conceptualization by two businesses.”
